For a Specific Purpose

Even the story of Jesus
so many years with no information
for most of the actors
only for a unique moment
fleeting, on the stage,
not so much fifteen minutes of fame
a part for a specific purpose

Maybe the same for us
like this blind man, a prophet
a witness to the power of God
a gadfly able to speak
to chide the leaders
the mockery of their unbelief
alive for this purpose
not blind for his sin

Each of us, like the people
those in Christ’s stories
those who followed
who were faithful
those before us
All of us for a purpose
a reason we walk this earth
even if blind for a season
we can be healed by God

This Act of Power

Blessed, to be blind
to be healed by Christ
to see, to be alive
to be cleansed by his touch
This act of power
by the authority of God
Christ in that moment
saving him for eternity
His like for this purpose
not by his sin
not by the sin of his parents
a testament to God
The power of the Creator
the Savior, the Son
to heal our own blindness
when our work here is done

sight to the blind
that we would see
Christ over and over,
healing them physically
that we would believe

Not blind because of Sin

The man before Him
judged guilt, of sin
his blindness seen as a judgment
on his parents or on him
yet Christ denied their judgment
not blind because of sin
healing him completely
that they all may see

For this moment

For this moment, a purpose
his destiny, his call
an abject lesson
this man, this clay
healed of his blindness, his shame
a mirror on their unbelief
denying his holy name

However long he lived

However long
before or since
however long he lived
for this moment, this purpose
why he lived at all
To be healed by Christ
to reveal their blindness
failing to choose the light
unbelieving, to be faithful,
to the word of God
alive, before them,
in their sight
offering a foretaste
a time in the presence
walking with our God

that he might be witness
we might be restored
blind for a purpose
why he walked the earth
to be healed, questioned
a testament of love

Why was he blind

The people assuming
their beliefs demanding
that his blindness judgment
on his sins or his parents
yet Christ responding
stating something important
instructive in the reading
of his parable, the stories
what we can learn
the lessons in scripture
blind for a purpose
to heal the whole world

The pit, hell
the judgment, always
yet Christ’s promise
his offering for us
if we keep his word
if we act on our faith
if we cleave to the Lord
we will never see death

The murmurs of history

whispers of the martyrs
murmurs of history
sighs of angels
for the troubles in that land
Not at peace, silent
turmoil, anguish
not knowing rest
not yet at least
Hope for their future
through their rebirth
their struggles
that they would come together
in their freedom, the light
That they would walk
that the dead would know peace
that the murmurs of history
would be songs of relief

My father glorifies me
by making me a servant
by giving me power
authority to teach them
to heal the sick
to lift their chains, their sorrow
submitting my all to him
not seeking my glory

Not I Was

Christ’s claim of divinity
of being our God
in clear language
before Abraham
not a statement of the past
I existed once,

The Eternity of Christ – v2

Here before the world
before Abraham was
Christ claims his right
His identity as God

"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered,
"before Abraham was born, I am!"

The eternity of Christ
shouted out loud;
yet we failed to believe
and crucified our God

Before Abraham

Christ shocking them,
confounding us
our human minds
struggling to comprehend

His words a quake
shaking the world,
this is the truth,
“before Abraham was,
I am.”

The Son, our God
here on this earth
to end our sentence
to bring us to life

His Words like Waves

His statements building
rolling, thunder
his words like waves
repeating, urgent
Not human,
the authority from God
not demons, the devil
offering love

Glorified in heaven
not for my glory
not speaking to gather
power to me
Not of this world
a prophet, son-ship
sent by the Father
that all men may live

Perfume of Autumn

The fields, the cornstalks
turning like rice paper
erect for this moment
soon to fall
to meet the earth
like maples, the oaks
the chill in the air
harkening to winter
the squawk of the geese
bleating in the skies
the perfume of autumn
as the world dies

Confronting their Unbelief

Confronting their unbelief
the Savior before them
offering his testimony
the proof for his truth
his sovereignty
his mission from God
standing there before them
but he could not be heard
no matter what he said
they would not believe
a channel of God’s love
standing right before them
offering them salvation
if they would see Him

A Conduit of God’s Power

Christ’s words of meaning
of only saying so much
of not claiming glory
saving this for God
A conduit of God’s power
humble, a prophet
claiming only his deity
when they fail to hear
after they have hardened their hearts
unable to listen, to hear
speaking more clearly
when they will not believe

Not Seeking My Glory

Christ, God with us
stating his goal in serving
his power, his witness
seeking the glory of God
to share his life story
to offer us salvation
the way through the darkness
not to be raised up in this life
choosing instead the cross

Their blood upon his hands

The video graphic, warnings
his face bloody, his movement halting
his hand rising
to wipe the blood away
confused, perplexed
on his dying day
Not understanding
the blood there upon his hands
their blood, the martyrs
the people of his land
Staying too long
holding onto power
the blood of his nation
in his final hours

The blood from his face

The halting, jarring image
repeated, again and again
the jerking video
the blood, red
his hand futile
attempting to wipe
the blood from his face
too deep, too lasting
dying in disgrace

Whispers of the Martyrs

May the people listen
the leaders, the insurgents
those who stood for justice
who cried out for freedom
the tribes, the bands,
the disparate factions
may they all slow down
may they all heed their warnings
the whispers of the martyrs
speaking to them
to seek forgiveness
peace in their land
that the rebellion, revolution
would build a lasting peace
that they may rest easy
those who died in the streets

Peace for the Martyrs

Sadness will come
of the loss of this nation
of all of those who have died
all those persecuted
but today different
joy at his dying
sad to be glad, happy
but the madman is no more

Peace for the martyrs
all who have perished
all whose blood
run in the street
the decades of suppression
freedom, light
coming in wave on wave
into this dark night

The Ghosts of the Martyrs

Will they know rest
are they at peace
ghosts of the martyrs
of that land, Libya
The sword of justice
their tyrant vanquished
loyalists defeated
his time at an end
Cheering in the streets
the people triumphant
the ghosts of the martyrs
do their hear the singing
song of freedom
do they know rest
are they at peace

Molding our rocks, our clay

God’s truth unrelenting
shared in multiple ways
showing who Christ was
in words we can comprehend
Layer upon layer
or like waves crashing the shore
hopefully getting through to us
in ways we cannot ignore
molding our rocks, our clay
changing us from within
giving our whole lives over
giving ourselves to Him

Crashing upon our stone

Can we see ourselves there
standing before the Christ
failing to believe who he was
denying the power of God
Like waves on the shore
the arguments he spoke
being a channel, a portal
a conduit of God’s love
Ever clearer, urgent
though his time had not come
claiming the power, authority
finally that he was God’s son
Crashing on our stone
confronting our unbelief
Christ final spoke plainly
finally claiming the Father
that he is our God

Waves building

Almost able to see the words
power upon power
waves building
stronger
as layer upon layer
more of the truth becoming clear
the authority of God
giving, conveyed, created
as waves building
his arguments clearer
the man standing before them
the Prophet, the Messiah, the Son
the living embodiment of God

His words in crescendo - v2

Feeling the power,
waves upon wave
the Messiah speaking
though his time not ready
building in waves, ripples
his words in crescendo
building stronger, clearer
speaking as prophet,
as the Son, the conduit
then as the living God
telling them clearly
though they would not listen
they would not believe
unable to see the light
God in the flesh before them
but they were blind
not wanting to believe, to change
damned by their lack of faith

Do we want to believe

How like the leaders
those people, at that time
how much are we like them
denying the great I am
believing only in part
denying the Son, the Savior
because he tells the truth
pointing to our judgment

You belong to your father, the devil

Was Jesus giving up
throwing up his hands
calling the false believers out
those who would deny him
“You belong to your father,
the devil”, the Lord of this world
the king of darkness, unbelief
the judgment of the Lord
casting the words upon them
more a warning to us
to turn from the world, the devil
to give up control of our lives

Pleasing to God - 2

Only with faith
able to please God
to come into his favor
to live, to be restored

Pleasing to God
all of his days
paying the price on the cross
abandoned, alone
clothed in our shame
paying the price for us

Unable to Hear

Christ’s challenge, his sadness
even to those who claim belief
speaking to them plainly
that they are unable to hear
false believes only
blind to true faith
unable to hear what he said
falling from grace

Obedient to God

The example of Abraham
of the patriarchs
not just espousing the words
carrying them out
faith going, doing
obedient to God
not something easy
choosing to follow
to take up our cross
following our Master
whatever the cost

We are Slaves to Our Sin

We want to deny
our captivity, our chains
we are slaves to our sin
the judgment against all men
yet we have a path
holding onto Christ’s teachings
leading us from the darkness, the pit
rising up to the light
walking, not just professing
going in our faith
walking as Abraham before us
going as we are led

What we do

What we do, important
how we walk, faith
do we take up our cross
do we work in the fields
are we aimless, lost
What we do
rings out to eternity
echoes, ripples
waves moving in time
leaving a mark, an impact
ones we cannot know
yet we are to be faithful
going in the way of the Lord

The Wail of the Martyrs

A hum on the wind
the wail of the martyrs
if this is really the end
if this is truly over
The madman bloodied
hiding in his hometown
willing for more to die
to hold the illusion of power
freedom for himself
avoiding the dock of judgment
dying in a hail of fire
his body torn asunder
the wail of the martyrs
decades of oppression
soon will rise together
singing of this day

With Hope, With Love

Maybe the time now
to stand for the hopes of the people
that change would truly come
to balance the scales of justice
that more of our people
would share the same dreams
that the divide of the haves and have nots
would fall from the scene

With hope, with love
peaceful protest rising
claiming a chance to dream, to see
a future for our children
opportunity for the many
not wealth in few hands
sowing seeds of protest
in this troubled land

Acting as the Christ did
truly loving our neighbor
understanding all too well
that the powerful want to hold onto power
yet not giving in to their greed
to their injustice, tolerance
marking this time to stand to speak
to stand with our neighbors

Doing the right,
in this time, in this place
lovingly, shining the light
carrying the cross of Jesus
hope into the darkness, this world
healing the breach caused by man
going as servant, throughout this land
doing all that we can

A Personal Best

Magic in the fall air
blue sky azure
crispness of the afternoon
special guests for the viewing

Leaving dad in the dust
a sprint to the finish
a personal best
her time shorter
a victory, triumphant

Watching her in the glow
in the easy banter
singing with her friends
part of the team together

something unwelcome
ringing in my ear
a change forever

controlling carbs

So many voices

love pouring out
pouring over us
many voices
in distant places even
wrapping her, wrapping us
in God’s eternal love

Walking the Cross – 2 – v2

With a purpose
all of our days
walking the cross
living out our faith

Called by God
offered his grace
restoring our lives
up from the grave

Guide me Lord
where I am to walk
direct my steps
to stay on your path

Show me the way
focused on your voice
lead me on, Lord
in the way of the light

Following the lamb
shepherd of our lives
the Spirit guiding
while I carry my cross

“Loving God, we thank you for this day. Thank you for
your Word that guides and sustains us. As we hear
your Word may we rejoice in your loving-kindness and goodness;
may we draw ever closer to you.
We pray for eyes to see you in the world,
ears to hear your whisper on the wind, and a heart that is
moldable in your hands. All this we pray in the
name above all names, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”
