a lesson I must learn

This is a lesson I must learn
if I am to be at peace
too long have I let pain
hurt hold, constrain me

a lesson I must learn
“The first to apologize is the bravest.
The first to forgive is the strongest.
The first to forget is the happiest.”

In truth this may have been
written for me, for me
something I need to remember
or perhaps learn for the first time

maybe I could print it backward
put it on my forehead
so I would see it every time
I look in the mirror, I see myself

maybe I should tattoo the words
write it on the back of my hand
someplace I wouldn’t miss it
keeping it close by me, to teach me

a truth to remember, to see,
a lesson I must learn
but one whose truth I affirm
so many years of heartache

a lesson I must learn
“The first to apologize is the bravest.
The first to forgive is the strongest.
The first to forget is the happiest.”

the author is unknown, unwritten;
but so much truth in this simple phrase -
the first to forgive is the strongest
the first to forget is the happiest
