Feed Your Spirit – v2

Each day, feed your spirit
renew, refresh your dry bones,
the indwelling Spirit within you
feed your spirit with the living waters
the life giving word, the holy Word
ageless and timeless, living words
of God’s faithfulness, of the Creator’s love
sacrifice and promise, hope eternal

Feed your spirit well, deeply
richly, throughout your life,
life is in the word, internalized
drinking in, welling up,
Meditate on the hope of the prophets
the history of old, the story of the son
and the life of the apostles, our lives
living out the word

Feeling His Presence – v2

Kneeling at the rail
the altar’s bounty, the spring harvest
overflowing, the bright flowers of spring
a stone, rock, to remember,
the crown of thorns still on the cross

Words of praise, of joy,
an invocation, calling Christ, the Spirit, into our midst

Feeling the presence of Christ
here in the sanctuary
walking into our worship
sitting with me, on my pew
raising His voice
in those of the pastors

Calling us from winter’s slumber
Easter people, smiling
Joy in the morning
He is risen, and with us today

Find God Here

Here, right where I live
where I work, where I toil,
where we worship,
where my wife, my girls are with me,
where we live, here, now,
in this place where I am planted
as if by living streams of water.

Here, where this tree is planted now
to grow, to bloom, to offer shade
to scatter seeds from good fruit
planting, watering, in their season.

May I find God here, not some distant land,
standing beside me in my struggles
walking with me on my journey
holding my hand when I step out in faith
cheering with me in my joys
in those moments when I notice,
when I am present, when I feel Christ’s grace
(not that God’s grace is ever lacking).

Right here with me, epiphany, revelation
God as close as breath, when I am aware,
when I don’t feel the Spirit, May I find God’s face,
Christ’s presence, here with me now,
right here, right where I am planted.

Find Him There
The following poem was posted to the www.christianpoetry.org site
on April 1, 2009, my 49th birthday. I received the following email
from Reason A. Poteet, “Happy Birthday, Raymond.
Your poem today, “Traveling Far" reminds me of the message
a saintly guide had for our group visiting in Jerusalem several years ago.
He said, you have come so far to see the places where Jesus walked,
where He talked and healed and cast out demons two thousand years ago.
Jesus is still working today in your homes, in your schools,
in your churches...go home and find Him there, relish Him,
serve Him.” The poem above came from this.

Traveling Far

Unlike the shepherds,
on a nearby hillside, watching their sheep.

Not called by a choir of angels,
a chorus of heavenly host.

Reading the signs, as they did in Jerusalem,
traveling far, following his star.

By a faithfulness, greater than the people
the chosen ones.

Bringing gifts, these gifts,
in fulfillment, the birth, their gifts.

Believing where the select, the chosen did not,
traveling far, with real faith.

Following the star, the signs,
the coming of the newborn king.

Traveling Far – v2

Unlike the shepherds,
on a nearby hillside, watching their sheep
at night, their work.

Not called by a choir of angels,
a chorus of heavenly host
proclaiming across the sky, the Messiah’s birth.

Reading the signs, as they did in Jerusalem,
traveling far, following His star
from their distant land, in the east.

By a faithfulness, greater than the people
the chosen ones, Israel,
following His star, a quest.

Bringing gifts, these gifts,
that measured His life, His death,
in fulfillment, the birth, their gifts.

Believing where the select, the chosen did not,
traveling far, with real faith,
across the vast wilderness.

Following the star, the signs,
the coming of the newborn king,
the Messiah, Immanuel, born to us.

Finding Stillness – v2

Seeking You, Your presence
finding stillness, comfort
in Your loving arms
hoping for Your grace
to wrap around me,
providing for my needs
all of my days

Faithful to Your calling
the urgings, yearnings of my heart
to respond when You pursue me,
“Here I am, send me”;
going where I am needed
offering words of hope
of love, of prayer
happily doing the work

Fired up for Christ on Monday – v2

One of the messages on the screen
that we are so fired up for Christ
sitting safely, reverently, in the pews on Sunday

If only we could be fired up for Christ
on Monday, throughout the week,
in our work, in our play, in our daily lives
as we live out our days
Never shy about our faith
that which we believe

Ready to share our journey
our love of Christ
whenever the Spirit moves us
no matter the perceived cost

For God’s Holy Purpose – v2

Out of our love, the recognition
of the miracle of God’s grace,
His saving and renewing grace
We are to strive to live
for God’s holy purpose,
not out of a sense of duty
an obligation we are forced to bear

As a gift given in response
to an awesome gift,
unmerited and unearned
never to be able to repay

We are to be changed creations
living a new life,
within the vine
Bearing worthy fruit
for His glory
living out our days
filled with His love

God’s Will – v2

At the end of our prayer
before our parting, before the amen,
after the words, the request for wisdom
that my mouth would be used, that I would
find your words, oh God

Closing with the prayer
that Your will would be done
that the outcome, the decision
always, would be Your will,
that Your justice would be done
at the end of the process, the end of the day,

That my gifts, given by You,
would serve Your will, Your purposes
this day in this place
that I may be guided
by Your Spirit within

Great Gifts – v2

How profoundly different
how much better than our own
are the gifts of the Lord
not even enough,
the distinction of creation
all of the world good
but man very good

Great, even that,
not a strong enough adjective
the wonder of God’s gifts
to the humbleness of Man
our commonness evident
when compared with God’s glory
all we have to do
is look upon our own face

How much more,
the offerings of the Creator,
the Savior of man
in the gifts God gives us
life, creation,
a future in heaven
the unmerited sacrifice
taking on the sins of the world

Bowing humbly,
when we let go, when we submit,
turn our lives from the world
and return to God, like the Prodigal,
Arms open, just like the Father
Prodigal’s all of us
when we return home to God

All our sins, the judgment of our lives
all of the stain, washed clean by the Lord
His gifts big and simple,
eternal and daily
what we all give
pales in comparison
causing us to bow in humble praise

Her Faith – v2

Like a second layer of skin is her faith
right out there, the outer edge of her
exuding from her pores, from her being
her complete trust in God

Proclaiming the Good News, living the Word
sharing her faith, her joy, not letting the world,
life’s little problems steal her joy
proclaiming it out loud

Being the faith she believes, sharing her gifts
her spirit, His grace, answering His call
open and honest, ready to do His work
to Be His hands, now!

Silence can be a prayer

when the pain is too real
too deep for words
when doubt overwhelms us
buffeted by the world
Silence can be a prayer
the most authentic witness
sitting in the presence of God
feeling the Spirit with us
Sometimes words too weak
to touch the truth within us
talking to the Spirit of God
with groans and whispers
Silence can be a prayer
the most authentic witness
sitting in the presence of God
feeling the Spirit with us.

when the weight is too great
when doubt overwhelms you
pray to God, as you are,

prayers of silence

prayer not always coming
words raised out loud
prayers of silence
deep inside
sometimes the words won’t come
stuck in our throat
God hears our moans so deep
when words will not come
prayers of silence,
prayers as well
lifted up to God
prayers too deep for words
prayers lifted out loud.
